If you're unfamiliar with the system, it can seem daunting and complicated at first, but you'll get the hang of it once you start to use it. Don't feel pressured to try and memorize anything from the battle system—it's meant to be read as you go.

There's no standard format, but this may help you as you go along.

At the start of the battle, try to establish any special rules or conditions. Is it a triple battle? Are you only doing 1v1? Are you going to allow people to switch out? It's just a quick preface to set the ground rules before you get into the battle.

Example Trainer versus Sample Trainer
6v6 / no switch-outs / first slot - first pkmn

There will be posts where both trainers send out their Pokémon, and the Pokémon with the higher speed moves first.

A typical post might look like this.

Dakota (from PBA 2013) wrote:
Dakota yanked her own Pokéball off her belt and tossed it into the air. "Go, Honchkrow," she called. Light filled the classroom as the raven erupted from the ball with a loud squawk and began to circle above the Gorebyss, near the rafters. The trainer caught the ball as it came back down and locked Marina with a cold glare. "Drill Peck."

The Honchkrow wheeled around one last time before swooping down upon the Gorebyss with a piercing cry. It fanned its wings as skimmed above the water and gripped the Pokémon's long snout and dorsal fins with its talons. The raven began to take to the air with the Water-type in its clutch, landing sharp pecks around its eyes.

Honchkrow goes first!

Final Damage - 38

Honchkrow:
Battle Post Format Honchkrow
158/158 HP

Base Speed: 71

Eireann (from PBA 2014) wrote:
Eireann's hand twitched, but the smile didn't fade. The Pachirisu nuzzled against her ankles, oblivious. Now, she didn't care for the little rat, but it had its uses, and there was a certain... endearing quality to it. She wouldn't stand there and let herself be insulted, out here all alone, with no witnesses. Not by this rich snob, wed to the arrogance that came naturally to people like her. Not by anyone. Eireann paid her debts.

A Solosis was a powerful Psychic Pokémon, of course, but that was only to make up for its pathetic slowness. It could be outraced and overlapped by a Caterpie if you set them against each other on a track, and its telepathy and natural connections to a trainer counted for nothing if you struck hard, quick, and fast. Pachirisu were weak, but some Pokémon had more than brute strength.

It scurried up her leg and waist, onto her shoulder, and then onto her head, leaving a trail of tiny red paw prints up her body. Eireann pointed. "Pachi. Bite."

It leaped, landing on a branch, and raced forward, tail bouncing behind it. When it was within pouncing distance, the Pachirisu threw itself forward and down onto the Solosis head first. Eireann clasped her hands in front of her as it sank its fangs into the protective green membrane.

Base Damage - 22 HP
Super Effective - x2
Final Damage - 44 HP

Pachirisu
41/41 HP

How you style it is up to you! If you have any questions, ask, and I'll do my best to answer.
